Country in the city - create a rustic kitchen from scratch

Today we will tell you how to create a country-style kitchen design in a regular city apartment from scratch: what kind of finishing materials will fit, what should be a rustic kitchen set, how to choose furniture, curtains and decor.

But before we begin, let's define what we will mean by the word "country", because there are two basic approaches to understanding it:

• Country style as a common name for all village styles from different countries. In the context of the interior they can be classified as follows: French Provence, Alpine Chalet, Rustic, Tuscan, American, English, Scandinavian, Mediterranean and, of course, Russian country music;
• Country as exclusively American (or English) style of a country or country house.

In this article, we will summarize the concept of country music and consider all the above-mentioned village interior styles in a little detail.

Country kitchen - how to create and sustain country style?

How to combine the charm of rural life and the functionality of a modern city apartment in the interior of a typical kitchen? What is necessary or desirable to consider when creating a kitchen in country style?

All the "village" styles from English chebby chic to Russian country have:

• natural materials in decoration, furniture, textiles and decor;
• light coarseness, simplicity, attrition, and antiquity are appropriate;
• the preference of a natural color palette without bright accents and contrasts;

• the furniture is supposedly (or actually) hand-made, sewn, painted, hand-made or hand-made grandmothers;
• traditional ornaments, patterns, floral and floral motifs, peas and a cage are appropriate in the rustic interior;

• characterized by an abundance of kitchen textiles - tablecloths, towels, napkins, capes, pillows, etc.
• the correct country kitchens, as a rule, reflect the national identity and motives of folk art. What can not be entered in the kitchen country: glossy, chromed, plastic, shiny surfaces and objects, decor in a modern style, frankly artificial materials.

What you need to choose with caution: The main feature of the country kitchen is lightness, ease, simplicity. The interior should be as if you did not try hard, and the whole atmosphere of the “village kitchen” was formed naturally. Avoid excessive and / or low-quality props and imitations. For example, the notorious “rough brick wall” should not be painted - it really should be rough, albeit processed and painted.A dried lavender is much more organic fit into the interior of the kitchen in the style of Provence than artificial. But you can’t do without props in a city apartment, and the use of only natural materials in decoration and furniture is not always justified and affordable. Therefore, the “stylized” rustic cuisine in a city apartment is not at all a disadvantage, if it is harmonious, and most importantly - you like it and your family.

Country from scratch - the basics of finishing

As already mentioned, the country-style kitchen should be predominantly decorated with natural materials. But not always natural materials are accessible and practical. Let's find out what is suitable for interior decoration?

Floor

According to canon, the floor in the interior of the kitchen in a rustic style is decorated with natural stone, wooden planks or ceramic tiles. The first two materials are not available to everyone. Adequate to replace the floor from the array can floorboard, which at the expense of the upper wooden layer does not differ from the “original”, but is cheaper. Most low cost alternatives to wood - laminate and more practical linoleum “Under the tree” - modern coatings of high strength classes look quite nice and serve for a long time. Floorboard can be either painted or varnished or deliberately natural (with minimal processing).

Ceiling

There are several options for decorating the ceiling:

• Whitewash - whitewashed ceiling is very authentic. In this case, the base does not even have to be leveled: the interior in this style welcomes the presence of textured surfaces, rough and domestic (as opposed to the perfect smoothness of the lines of modern styles). If over time, the plaster starts to crack - do not worry, for country music is not critical.

• More practical option - matt (!) stretch ceiling - not afraid of floods, relatively affordable, takes only 4 cm in height and with careful handling will last a long time;
• Wooden ceiling - such a decoration will immediately turn your urban kitchen into a village or dacha veranda. But the tree in its natural color will visually "reduce" the ceiling, so if your kitchen is low, then think about the white wooden wall paneling that Scandinavians love so much;

• The combination of whitewash and wood - wooden ceiling beams against the background of a freshly whitewashed ceiling will give the interior a lived-in look. But this is exactly the props that in typical homes is relevant only in quality performance, in moderation and under the condition of high ceilings.

Walls

The walls in the interior of the country kitchen can also be decorated in various ways:

• Painting: It is necessary to give preference to warm shades (beige, cream, natural green, light brown, olive, etc.) or basic, for example, white and gray.

• Decorative plaster: the roughness of the walls will emphasize the old-fashioned style and simplicity of style. Feeling as if the owners had just done their own repairs.
• Wallpaper: suitable wallpaper flowered, checkered, striped and with traditional ornaments.

• Tile: ceramic or metlahskaya tile suitable for the design of the working area.

Equipment

Curtains

Curtains made from natural materials can be monophonic, flowered, peas, check, with embroidery and lace. As for the style, in addition to traditional curtains, you can choose: fabric roll models, Roman, curtains, cafes, tulle. And you can to decorate the curtains with lambrequin. Country implies the use of natural range in textiles: sea blue, sunny yellow, grass green, etc. A wide window sill can be decorated with clay pots or wooden boxes with living plants.

Accessories

You can decorate the kitchen interior with the following accessories:

• wicker and iron baskets, chests and boxes, pots and buckets;

• tableware with flowers and edges, decorative dishes made of clay or wood, and decorative plates on the walls that can be easily hung with your own hands;

• kerosene lamp, candlesticks in the form of a lantern or a candelabrum;
• handmade embroidery, rag dolls, pillows, capes, walkways, home-woven napkins and tablecloth, combined in color or pattern with curtains;
