How to choose the size of the kitchen table

kitchen table dimensions

When choosing a table for the kitchen, the following are taken into account:

  • style of the room and its dimensions;
  • purchase budget;
  • number of family members.

But the main thing - it's all the same size. Choosing a kitchen table, you need to focus on the standard, based on the rules of ergonomics, because on average it will be operated for 7-9 years, and it should be convenient to use it. Let's find out how, while in the store, you can determine the optimal size of the main item in the kitchen.

What sizes are considered standard

Table with serving

  • To calculate the size of the dining table, you need to use the following rule: for each person for a comfortable meal should have a surface of at least 60 * 40 cm (width and depth, respectively).
  • And in the middle there must be at least 20 cm of free space for common serving items (salad bowls or a vase with flowers). Therefore, the minimum width is 80-85 cm, and the length is selected depending on the number of diners and the area of the kitchen.

The standard form is a rectangle that can comfortably seat four people. In this case, the height will be 75 cm, length - 100-120 cm, and width - 80 cm.

But you can choose a folding or sliding design, where the width and length of the table top will change, and even the height of the transforming tables will change. A sliding table can turn from a standard for 2-4 persons into a full-fledged dining table with a table top up to 3 meters long. In the photo below there is a folding variant from Ikea, the Ingatorp model for 4-6 persons.

Sizes and capacities of rectangular and square table

Kitchen tables - square and rectangular

Rectangular kitchen table is considered the most convenient for everyday use. Choosing a medium-sized model (about 90 * 150 cm), you will provide comfortable seating for 6-10 people. The ratio of capacity and size here are:

  • 150 * 90 cm - 4-6;
  • 200 * 110 cm - up to 8;
  • 260 * 110 cm - up to 10;
  • 320 * 110 cm - up to 12.

It is necessary to take into account the kitchen area, because the dining table will be convenient to use only in the case when the chairs are moved away without problems, and the passage between the dining room group and other furniture will be comfortable - it is desirable to withstand this distance of at least 100 cm.

For example, from the wall to the table top there should be at least 90 cm of free space, then it will be convenient to sit here. And if you decide to move the table to the wall with the long side, then four people will be accommodated behind it, provided that the dimensions of the table top are 80x120 cm. If you place the “rectangle” with the short side, you will get 5 seats and pushing it in the middle of the room - 6

Keep in mind that stationary rectangular models are usually quite cumbersome, and therefore a folding option is better for a small room.

Folding tables of small sizes from Ikea are very convenient in use (in the photo below).

Perhaps the most compact, but at the same time roomy, is a square-shaped table. This form is especially relevant for small kitchens, kitchen-living room with a dedicated dining area and for small kitchen-dining rooms, because square tables of any size are economical to space. So, for the daily dinners of a family of four, a square of 90 * 90 cm for 4 persons will be enough. The photo below shows the square tables in the interiors of small kitchens.

In the spacious rooms is appropriate a large square table, designed for 8 people, as in the following photo.

Sizes of a round and oval table

For round dining table there is a slightly different standard:

  • Diameter 110 cm - no more than 4 people;
  • 130 cm - 6 people;
  • 150 cm - 8;
  • 170 cm - up to 10.

This option will look traditional, elegant, in addition, the round table has no corners, so it is shown for families with children. But it has a smaller capacity compared to rectangular structures. However, in this segment, you can also choose folding and sliding structures, and transforming tables.

To save space, a round table is placed in a corner and placed closer to the wall.

For small kitchens, semi-circular options are more suitable - such as in the following photos:

Oval designs can rightly be called the most practical - they look more original than rectangular, and more convenient to use than round ones.

In addition, there are no sharp corners with full preservation of the useful surface of the table top, which ensures safety for families with small children. However, if such a model is longer than one and a half meters, it will still take quite a lot of free space. In small kitchens, most often oval tables are completed with a comfortable kitchen corner as in the photo below.

    We have a small kitchen, we recently bought a semicircular table there, eventually we managed to get rid of several problems at once: the child stopped stuffing cones on the corners of the table, the kitchen became freer and more comfortable, there are more people at this table. I can conclude that a semicircular table for a small kitchen is the best option.

    The size of the table is chosen for the family, for adults and two children it will be hard for dinner at the round table. I also want to say that for me, for example, classic tables with sharp corners seem very outdated, so the corners on our rectangular kitchen table are rounded.
